Why Canada’s Election Is a BIG DEAL

I’M BEN MANKIEWICZ THE YOUNG TURKS
CANADIAN CORRESPONDENT. HERE’S WHAT’S HAPPENING IN
CANADA. THIS IS WHY WE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT
IT. FIRST OF ALL THE ELECTION IS IN OCTOBER OF THIS YEAR, THE END
OF OCTOBER. AM I CORRECT? OCTOBER 19TH. THAT IS THE ELECTION, AND THE
CAMPAIGN BASICALLY STARTED THE SUMMER.
IT’S AN 11 WEEK ELECTION. SOME CANADIANS ARE COMPLAINING
THAT IT’S TOO LONG. OH, CANADA. THAT’S A CHANGE FROM CANADA
THAT HAS ESSENTIALLY BEEN A TWO-PARTY STATE WITH A NUMBER OF
SMALLER PARTIES THAT GET SOME SHARE IN THE LEGISLATURE. BUT NOW WE HAVE THE CONSERVATIVE
PARTY IN CANADA LED BY STEVE HARPER AND THE ñ I HAVE AT
TIMES ON THE SHOW SUGGESTED THAT STEVE HARPER IF YOU
COMPARE HIM TO THE U.S. WOULD BE MORE OF A
MAINSTREAM DEMOCRAT. A LOT OF CANADIANS HAVE
TAKEN ISSUE WITH THAT. THIS IS A GUY THAT IS FOLLOWED
THE MANTRA OF GEORGE W. BUSH. THE CONSERVATIVES ARE NOT AS
CONSERVATIVE AS OUR CONSERVATIVES ARE. THEN THERE IS THE LIBERAL PARTY
IN CANADA AND THAT IS THE PARTY OF PETER TRUDEAU, THEY
WERE IN POWER THROUGH MUCH OF THE 70S AND 80S. THEY ARE NOW THE THIRD PART OF
THE NEW DEMOCRAT PARTY AND HAVE EMERGED AS A REAL CHALLENGER TO
THE CONSERVATIVES IN CANADA. THE CAN CERTAINLY BE A COALITION
BETWEEN THE LIBERALS IN CANADA AND THE NEW
DEMOCRAT PARTY. LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT SOME
POLLING IN CANADA. THIS IS THE CANADIAN
BROADCASTING CORPORATION GIVING US THE POLL. THE CBC POLL TRACKER GIVES THE
AVERAGE OF 31.9 PERCENT SUPPORT IN
THE POLLS, WITH THE CONSERVATIVES FOLLOWING
CLOSELY AT 30.1 PERCENT. THE LIBERALS, IN TURN,
HAVE THE SUPPORT OF 27 PERCENT OF CANADIANS. WHY IT’S SIGNIFICANT IS THAT THE
LIBERALS ARE DESCRIBED AS BEING VERY SIMILAR TO
DEMOCRATS IN AMERICA. VERY WISHY-WASHY, EAGER TO MAKE
COMPROMISES, NOT TAKING A STAND ON ANYTHING. BUT THE NEW DEMOCRAT PARTY COULD
REALLY AND WHY THIS MATTERS ñ COULD THROW A NOT INSIGNIFICANT
WRENCH INTO THE U.S. CANADIAN RELATIONS. YOU HAVE A
MAJOR IMPACT ON THEIR RELATIONS. CANADA IS OUR BIGGEST
TRADING PARTNER. OUR ECONOMIC RELATIONSHIP WITH
CANADA IS AS IMPORTANT OR MORE IMPORTANT THAN ANY
ECONOMIC RELATIONSHIP WE HAVE. THE NEW DEMOCRAT PARTY IN
CANADA LIKELY TO OPPOSE THE PIPELINE, ALSO LIKELY TO OPPOSE
TPP, SO ALL OF THIS WOULD HAVE ñ AND SIGNIFICANT AGRICULTURAL
STANDARDS. THIS WOULD BE AN AGGRESSIVELY
INVOLVED GOVERNMENT IF THE NDP WINS. THEY ARE LED BY A GUY- THAT THE
LIBERALS ARE LED BY PIERRE TRUDEAU’S SON WHO IS
SUPER HANDSOME. IT’S INTERESTING
THAT IN AMERICA DESPITE THE FACT THAT WE HAVE BEEN EXTREMELY
CLOSE RELATIONSHIP WITH CANADA, WE FIND THEM SO
INTERESTING. THERE IS NO GOOD REASON FOR IT. I GET EXCITED JUST LISTENING
TO YOU TALK ABOUT THE POSSIBILITY THAT WERE THEY TO
BE THE HEAD OF A GOVERNING COALITION THAT THEY COULD
STAND AGAINST TPP. BECAUSE HERE IN AMERICA IT
SEEMS THAT THERE IS A LOT OF OPPOSITION TO TPP. SO I QUESTION
OUR ABILITY TO STOP IT. THAT IS WHY THIS ELECTION IN
CANADA IS SIGNIFICANT FOR CANADA. BUT ALSO SIGNIFICANT
FOR US HERE IN AMERICA. THERE ARE MILLIONS OF WORKERS IN
AMERICA WHOSE FATE COULD BE DECIDED POSSIBLY BY THIS
ELECTION AND THEY WOULD HAVE NO IDEA. THEY WILL NEVER KNOW THAT THAT
IS INFLUENCING THE WAY THAT THEY INTERFACE WITH THEIR
EMPLOYERS AND WITH OTHER COUNTRIES IN THE NEXT
FEW DECADES. THAT IS A GREAT POINT. AND I THINK THE OTHER PIECE THAT
IS INTERESTING IS THAT WE ARE AT A TIME OF
GLOBAL PUSH BACK AGAINST THE WORLD
FINANCIAL ELITE. THE RISE OF THE NEW DEMOCRATIC
PARTY REFLECTS THAT JUST AS THE RISE OF THE DAVIS IN SPAIN,
I THINK IT SHOWS THAT THERE IS A PUSH BACK AGAINST WHAT WAS
GENERALLY ACCEPTED TO BE THE RULE AND ORDER IN THE WAY
THINGS ARE IN THE ECONOMY. IT HAS TO MAKE YOU FEEL
ENCOURAGED IF YOU’RE WORKING RIGHT NOW FOR BERNIE
SANDERS THAT IF WE SEE IN OCTOBER 2015, THE NEW DEMOCRATIC
PARTY HOLD ON AND FOR THE GOVERNMENT THERE IN
CANADA, THAT IS A SIGN. WHAT HAPPENS IN CANADA DOES
NOT HAPPEN IN A VACUUM. THAT WOULD REPRESENT WHAT WE ARE
SEEING WITH THOSE CROWDS. IT’S ANECDOTAL EVIDENCE, BUT
IT’S PRETTY STRONG. I’M WITH RICHARD. AS WE HAVE THE RIGHT RING
WARMONGERS EMPOWERING SO MANY PARTS OF THE WORLD, WHETHER
IT’S PUTIN OR NETANYAHU, LET ALONE FAR WORSE
FIGURES, AT THE SAME TIME WE HAVE THAT RISE, GREECE, SPAIN,
CANADA ETC. IT GIVES
YOU HOPE. THE CALVARY IS ON ITS WAY. AND IF THE CALVARY ñ
I’M NOT SURE THAT CANADA IS VERY INDICATIVE OF WHAT IS GOING
TO HAPPEN IN THE U.S. THEY HAVE FAR CLEANER ELECTIONS. THE NDP WINNING IN ALBERTA IS
AMAZING AND ALMOST NEVER WOULD HAPPEN IN THE US. OUR OPPOSITION WOULD HAVE $1 BILLION AND WOULD RUN
UNLIMITED POLITICAL ADS. CANADA IS WHAT AMERICA COULD BE
IF WE HAD CLEAN ELECTIONS. I DON’T THINK WE DISAGREE
POLITICALLY. THEY ARE VERY SIMILAR EXCEPT
WE ARE MORE GUN NUTTY. ON THE OTHER HAND I WOULD SAY
I AGREE, BUT ON THE OTHER HAND I THINK YOU HAVE TO
FIGHT ON ALL FRONTS. WE CAN WIN ELECTIONS. AS WE ARE WORKING ON TRYING TO
CHANGE THE FINANCING OF OUR SYSTEM, WE SHOULD ALSO BE
RUNNING AND PUTTING OURSELF OUT THERE AND HAVING A CHANCE TO
STEAL SOME SEATS FROM THE PEOPLE WHO DON’T
DESERVE THEM. I AGREE. IT’S A GENUINE DISAGREEMENT. I DIDN’T REALIZE THAT I STOLE
ñ HE SAYS ABOUT JUSTIN TRUDEAU THAT HE IS CONSIDERED HE’S SO
YOUNG. AND HE DID NOT SERVE IN THE
LEFT LIBERAL CABINET. ON THE OTHER HAND, HE’S A
VERY GOOD-LOOKING GUY. I WILL GIVE YOU A
PASS ON THAT ONE. YOU NOTICE, AND THEN YOU CAN’T
HELP BUT KEEP BRINGING IT UP.

  1. Probably going to be a hung parliament with the Conservatives winning the most seats, followed by the Liberals and the NDP.

  2. I wish I was old enough to vote… the closest to voting is the student vote. It's were students vote for who they want but it doesn't change the election, and they compare it to what Canadians voted for.

(I bet the student vote has a higher turn out than the actual election;) JK but probably actually. 2011 was I think 60% voter turnout)

I, like many others, want Harper out.

  3. Why are you laughing? The Canadian elections this time are too long.
American elections are too long. It is a overbearing.

  4. Cenk: "Canada is what the US could be with clean elections."

Um, nope. Money rules the roost here in Canada just the same as the US, but some Canadians got tired of listening to Big Money when they voted.

  5. From the Greater Montreal, Quebec, Canada area…

As of this writing Canada's Federal election has jut been won by the Liberals led by Justin Trudeau.

But first, I am not sure how many americans realize that the voting system s of our 2 countries are very different.

    1) As for Election spending: Canada has election spending limits laws. Every candidate is required to submit regular pro-active report on their campaign spending, and they are limited to set sums, depending on what positions they are running for. This seeks to avoid the monetary "washing out" you describe in the U.S. political arenas.

    2) Canada's electoral system is far simpler. There is no such thing as spilt bill voting, there is no electoral college. simply, the party which first wins enough seats to have a clear majority of seats, ends up the ruler, and their party leader will be the nest prime minister. also, many posts that are commonly elected in the U.S. are appointees in Canada, the senate being one lot.

    3) Since the Liberals have just won the election, and one of Justin Trudeau's planks was to change the way the senate is to work, this suggests to me that for the short term our senate is in a bit of a state of limbo until the new government has time to hash out the changes to come.

    Energy, Pipelines and the Environment::

The building of a pipeline is not going to fill the longer term employment needs of workers in either country. However, during the construction period, or shortly after, let a part of the money that might have paid wages and salaries directly be used to defer the longer term cost of re-training these workers to suit the needs of what is to come, thuis preparing a workforce of the future to deal with energy needs, distribution and management in even better ways for all humanity. This should lead towards less use of fossil fuels and hence the obvious environmental benefits globally.

America has fought wars, and made a lot of money (Canada also, to some degree) out of the arms race urgency of war, more than war itself which is simply heinous and destructive. why can't we all fight a so-called "war on environmental deterioration"?

If this is fighting for anything, it is fighting for our very global survival. So let the historic militaristic mentality of the past aim itself against that which would seek to eventually kill us all by rendering the planet uninhabitable?

    4) As for the pipeline, I think a pipeline IF properly remote monitores, can be a safer wna more efficient way to transport petroleum products than trucks and trains, however that factor alone is not, by any means the only critical factor.

    5) Also (having some 50 years background in technology and having worked in both countries), I think both countries, and in fact, the whole world need to work in greater consort to obtain the energy, especially electricity, in the most renewable, sustainable and ecological ways possible according to the geography of each region. This will be an omnidirectional, interactive series of means, using as varied a gamut of sources as reasonably possible, according to what nature provides area for area.

In some areas, we should be developing geothermal power. In other areas it is amalgamating small amounts of generation from a miriad of small waterfalls, in other areas, large dams may be the most effective overall. But for each diverse means of generating electricity, what we can do will help avoid over-dependence in other areas on any one type of source, diversifying the inevitable risks of the unforseeable from one to another.

In Canada, we do not use breeder reactors, and so avoid the extreme danger of the plutonium they create. Research is needed to defuse the eternal danger of plutonium, preferably by findng a way to make it reconstitute into something which is at least less dangerous, at best a reusable nuclear fuel of some sort that does not presently exist, but without engendering even more deadly by-products.

Obviously this is no easy or cheaply obtained goal. Those seeking to develop energy by other means must be paced enough to ensure balanced progress on such a dangerous hazard as plutonium. (If hthis seems excessively difficult on earth, some thought might well be given to the new Spaceport America, or an industrial twin, to send plutonium into space, just far enough to be able to do the mutation I described. Once done, the results might possible be split, one part of it to remain in space for use by space vehicles, avoiding the need to propel as much other fuel into space for our space energy needs. the other part might then be returned to earth in a safer form for terrestrial use.

If, among the by-products of this, a significant amount of electricity were to be produced, some of that could be used to keep batteries in orbit of one or another sort recharged when solar energy is not adequate from time to time.

  6. F.Y.I. The N.D.P., GREENS and LIBERALS all opposed the FATCA IGA that you so loved and bullied Canada into accepting upon threat of sanctions.

  7. watching this literally 2 hours after the election in Canada ended….with a Trudeau majority government 😀 NDP crashed and conservatives were booted out of office with just 100ish seats.

  8. " There is a third party emerging as a force in the country’s historically two-party system."
NDP emerging as a new party? It's been around for over fifty years, and has held office provincially many times, and has periodically served as the minority Federal government.

    – TYT has no idea WTF they're talking about. As usual.

  9. Oh man these guys really don't know what they're talking about. It's like they did a google search on Canadian politics then went on the air. The rise in the NDP in last election was a result of the Liberals being in shambles, everyone hating Harper and everyone loving Layton. The Liberals have a new young leader, everyone still hates Harper and Jack Layton passed away. They talked WAY too much about NDP without understanding they had no legitimate staying power without Layton. It's no surprise Trudeau won it, anyone could see it coming, it was just a question of minority or majority.

  10. This was a fantastic victory for young people and Canada made the right decision.

I only hope that Trudeau starts Canada on a path where we stop fighting over consumption of wealth.  The orgy of consumption we have seen over the last 50 years, and the fighting over the division of that wealth, first class wars, then race wars and now a gender war, has made this the least productive and most degenerate time in history.

I just hope that the new leader means what he says about trying to get everyone working together to build and live together, rather than to consume.  I worry that he is ahead of his time, but I hope Canadians realize that a shift from "I" to "WE" is desperately required.  Canada is a fantastic piece of land, and it is now time that the Canadian people prove that they deserve it.

We really have to stop fighting and competing for wealth, whether you are (in no particular order) First Nations, Teachers, White men, Asians, Women, French Canadians, GLBT or unionized workers, stop fighting over how the wealth is distributed and worry more on creating it.

If you are over 50, do everyone a favor and shut up.  You had your time and you leave the world a far worse place than when you came into it.

Hopefully, Canada can set an example that the USA can follow.

  11. Too long? Do the Canadians have any clue about how long time it takes to visit all communities across their vast territory? Deciding the countrys fathe for Years to come, without a proper debate? Only authoritarian monopoly forces wants the political debate to be as short as possible. The longer the debate goes on, the bigger risk their Dirty secrets gets exposed.

  12. You are wrong about Harper's place politically he is very like George Bush only smarter, with a touch of Nixon. I am fond of Americans eh.. some of my best friends are expat Americans. Americans are only interested in America and are very ignorant about the rest of the world.

  13. so the polls were back asswards as the Liberals won. and not just won but got a majority government. it was a Liberal sweep.

  14. I like how these guys are actually respectful. John Oliver bashed Canada. Seems here that these guys know that our election can have an effect on the US

  15. We have been a two-and-a-half party state for over seventy years. We are not a two-party state; only your nation is.

If you're going to cover news of our nation, please do the five minutes of research necessary.
Also, if you need a news story to explain why your most devoted ally, closest cultural and literal neighbour, and most significant trade partner's elections matter: you're a dick

  16. funny how the liberals were the "third party" in this video but the liberals smashed the conservatives and NDP taking MAJORITY government

  17. Canada dosnt have clean election , its now a " liberal dictatorship " for the next 4 years , so yeah like the US , its a never ending exchange of power between the conservative and liberals , just like the joke that is US , who as exchange of power between democrates and republican , its the same joke all over agains

  18. Strike out.
Shows what happens when Americans try to discuss the politics in other countries, and know nothing about what they are talking about.

  19. Canada had the Highest voter turnout in 20 year and we elected a majority Liberal government by a landslide. This is after 10 years of conservative rule. After just three days we committed to pulling out bombing mission in Syria, turned down a massive controversial pipeline, Cancelled the F35 purchase, and started amending our version of the patriot act that was signed in. We also will be legalizing marijuana for the entire

This is what can happen if everyone votes!

  20. oh! you were talking about the financial situations of the parties during the Alberta elections? The Alberta NDP ran their campaign on a shoestring.. They had the smallest caucus in the house and also the smallest donation base compared to the Alberta Progressive Conservative party, (what a contradiction of terms eh?). Even the polls put the PCs way ahead. The PCs were in power in Alberta for the better part of a Generation. The alternative right wing party the Wildrose party came close to unseating the PCs in the previous election but came up short, The NDP came in third and the Alberta Liberals had a small showing in the legislature as well. So the odds of having the NDP form government were definitely against them. They ran a strong campaign against a strong experienced PC caucus and won its almost a classic David and Goliath story

  21. It's the New DemocratIC party not the "New Democrat" party. "New democratic" as in social democratic (i.e. the socialist party). They are not a minor party. They've been an influence since before the Second World War when they were called the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation party (CCF). They won power in Saskatchewan post War where they pioneered universal health care. The national party pushed for this in Federal parliament. The liberals have governed by stealing the best ideas of this party for 50 years…

  22. This clown says that the Liberals are seen as "wishy-washy", not really taking a stand on anything, which is utter nonsense. Liberals are seen as middle of the road, who will make decisions based on the issues, not from a predetermined ideology.

  23. "Canadian correspondant" wearing a Budweiser t-shirt. I'm sorry, but this Ben Mankiewicz is very ignorant about Canada, Canadian politics, and Canadian opinion. Every comment is condescending, and in comparison to the U.S.A. NDP leader is Thomas Mulcair, and enough with the "handsome" comments, because Canada is "in America".

I also have to question having four stereotypical American men on this panel. I'm sorry, but absolutely atrocious panel.

  24. The conservative party of Canada is not as conservative as the republicans, however Harper would fit right in with the republicans.

  25. Canada got an effete male bimbo twink just like Barry Hussein…Not a surprise, both birdbrains are fans of the Jihadis…Importing millions of cut throats will have "interesting" consequences…here's hoping the mud slime saw off your neck first…
Here comes the mud slime invasion:
    http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=6d6_1447184861

  26. bagged milk is a regional thing..mostly in Ontario, i have never bought or seen bagged milk other then Television or hearing Americans laughing about it. lol

  27. There is a tsunami of mediocrity sweeping the western world. This is certainly not just a conservative phenomenon. Liberal-humanism is in the end the nihilistic philosophy of social entropy as decade after decade the world becomes more and more a contemptibly disorganised social sewer devoid of any meaning. Like conservatives, liberal main stream parties have no answers for anything. Trudeau's first national improvement act is the idiotic mass importation of muslims (those people whose own culture cant produce a country anywhere worth living in). Who, I wonder, will liberals blame when they complete their program of national meaninglessness. From non-existent borders (and by extension nations) and cutting back-room trade deals to ship local jobs offshore (don't kid yourself, they will continue conservative policy), these main-stream career political hacks will no doubt just roll their eyes and regale us with more rhetoric about what a wonderfully diverse (diffuse) world we have. The liberal golden age that is now upon us will take on the shades of a cess-pool.

  28. Clearly you know nothing about Canadian 3 party system There is new
a one seat also for the Green Party. It's been that way well over 60 yrs.

  29. The real reason the USA should care about Canada, is not just because Canada is their largest trading partner, but because of WHAT Canada trades.
Canada provides : WATER, ELECTRICAL POWER, FUEL, FOOD. these are KEY resources to the USA's economy.

  30. In over 40 years our new government with Trudeau are now investigating missing aboriginals that were most likely killed by the corrupt leadership of the conservatives.

The worst thing is that Trudeau is not stopping the TPP or the police spying bills, or banning monsanto…

  31. TRUDEAU IS IMPORTING MUSLIMS INTO MILITARY BASES AND DISPLACING THE CANADIAN MILITARY.
EFFECTIVELY HE IS IMPORTING THE ANTI-DEMOCRATIC IDEOLOGY OF ISLAM WITH ITS OWN SHARIA LAW.
OVER 30% OF MUSLIMS SUPPORT THE INTRODUCTION OF SHARIA LAW SO THEY ARE NOT MODERATE.
SHARIA LAW IS FUNDAMENTAL TO ISLAM, SO THIS 30% ARE FUNDAMENTALISTS.
TRUDEAU IS COMMITTING DEMOCRATIC SUICIDE, LIKE OBAMA, MERKEL IN GERMANY AND CAMERON IN THE UK
TAKE A LOOK AT THE MIDDLE EAST TODAY AND THAT IS THE WESTERN WORLD OF THE FUTURE – AND THE NOT-TOO-DISTANT FUTURE EITHER.

  32. As far as I know that work Unions are also employees and if they don't DEMAMD their Salary cutback FIRST, HOW WOULD THEY DEMAND IT FOR CUPE "EMPLOYEES"????

  33. Basically all are parties suck.
    Liberals are socialists, and feminists
    Green are anti-science
    NDP is super socialist
Conservatives are hyper religious, conservative, and climate deniers

Who do I vote for in this country.

  34. Canada may be uninteresting but the stats are mainly retards, and I can back that up with one word. "trump"

  35. Actually the liberals are more like the left wing of the democrats. The NDP is off the charts in American politics

  36. I love when Americans laugh at the Mounties in Canada… Ok America, while you laugh a minority gets beaten up every day in your country, so remain incompetent then, I'll stick with our horse-riding police who keep the crime low and many of our people safe.

  37. In Canada the real issue is changing the first past the post election policy. Porportional Representation is the real issue.

  38. news for ya, Young Turds and chunk -canadians own as many firearms per capita as americans, except that our guns up north are a heavier percentage of long guns instead of handguns.
trudeau is nothing compared to his father ,who in turn was a joke compared to Lester Pearson before him.
it would be like comparing the current democrats hillary and obama to JFK.
politics in both countries have moved so far to the left that candidates would have to publicly endorse Stalin's genocide pogroms to be considered "socialist".

  39. listen if America cut down on defence for the country and cut down on food to feed the obese then that country would be better off

  40. There is no left wing in Canada. Only silly people think Liberals or NDP are leftist. Right and Center-Right are your options in Canada. Justin is Canada's Hillary Clinton. Canadian conservatives complain about him for partisan reasons since they too stupid to realize Justin's pretty conservative while real liberals dislike Justin because they know he isn't liberal at all.

  41. When you have shorter elections, Ben, you cut short the opportunities for excess money. We don't want our elections to cost the incredible amounts of $$ that yours do, because frankly, yours seem corrupted. Besides, with a smaller economy, we cannot afford to have the government at a standstill for so long, one year +-?? Insane, and a waste of time and resources.

  42. For future reference, the Liberal Party was in power in Canada from 1968-1979, 1980-1984, the (Progressive) Conservatives, 1979-1980, 1984-1993. Liberal Party dominated the 70s and half of the 80s.

  43. Our leaders debates include our green leader as well. Elizabeth may adds some real insight into our debates. Can you imagine, 4 leaders having a debate? US debates are very very empty of any kind of substance

  44. This is proof that tyt and Democrats in America collude and get elections fixed in other countries. TYT is in collusion to get the liberals and democrats to win.

  45. ok…this election is long past…but i think it would be remiss, not to point out that with all the fear mongering, and doom saying both sides of the border that, the ndp (not their name then) gave us universal health care under tommy douglas….and i say this as a person advocating "POLITICAL ABSTINENCE"…but i give credit, where credit is due

  46. Cenk! Cavalry is a bunch of dudes on horses carrying weapons. Calvary is the name of the place where they supposedly crucified Jesus. 🙂 For grammar & language nerds, that's kind of like George Bush saying NU-KYU-LER instead of "nuclear." The rest of the video is interesting though. Have a nice day.

  47. You guys dont understand how it is up here. Thoes political partys are 3 peas in a pod. You can vote for larry, curly or moe makes no diff . We will still be living under the 3 Stooges dictatorship that has been in place for 100 years or more. Are elections are a sham . If the people could decide who gets on the ballot then we could vote out the scum that has us at gun point.

  48. Actually, this lack of interest says a lot more about Americans than it does about Canada. Americans by and large are pretty ignorant about the whole world. I don't know if it's because of the education system or because they're too busy working two jobs or more to make ends meet and have no energy to spare on being curious about the world, but many Americans don't know peanuts about anything beyond their borders. It shows in their behavior as tourists too. They don't do their homework about what they can bring into Canada and get arrested at the border for having firearms in their cars among other things.
