BUT FIRST– WE BEGIN TONIGHT WITH THE LATEST IN CAMPAIGN 2016– ALL THE VOTES HAVE BEEN COUNTED IN THE HOUSE RACE FOR DISTRICT FIFTEEN. AS WE TOLD YOU ON EYEWITNESS NEWS AT 6… NICHOLAS MATTIELLO APPEARS TO HAVE KEPT HIS SEAT. (MM) THE UNOFFICIAL VOTE TALLY HAS THE HOUSE SPEAKER LEADING BY 65 VOTES — BUT HIS OPPONENT — STEVEN FRIAS — WANTS A RECOUNT. TONIGHT– MATTIELLO HELD A CLOSED DOOR CAUCUS OF HOUSE DEMOCRATS AT CHAPEL GRILLE IN CRANSTON– TAPPING WARWICK REPRESENTATIVE JOE SHEKARCHI AS THE NEW HOUSE MAJORITY LEADER. EYEWITNESS NEWS REPORTER STEPH MACHADO JOINS US LIVE IN CRANSTON– WITH MORE ON TONIGHT’S EVENTS. SPEAKER MATTIELLO AND REPRESENTATIVE SHEKARCHI WERE UNANIMOUSLY ELECTED TO THOSE LEADERSHIP SPOTS BY THEIR DEMOCRATIC COLLEAGUES HERE TONIGHT…. BUT IT WAS VERY CLOSE…MATTIELLO WON BY JUST 65 VOTES AFTER THE MAIL BALLOTS WERE COUNTED. Frias nat “65….recount. lets go” From the bottom of my heart I want to thank the citizens of district 15 for their support, sending me back for 2 years MATTIELLO AND THE NEW DEMOCRATIC HOUSE CAUCUS–WHICH PICKED UP 2 SEATS–GOT TOGETHER RIGHT AWAY AT THE CHAPEL GRILLE, AND RE-ELECTED MATTIELLO AS SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE…..AND PICKED WARWICK REPRESENTATIVE JOE SHEKARCHI AS MAJORITY LEADER…..SINCE THE CURRENT LEADER JOHN DESIMONE LOST HIS REELECTION BID. Mattiello: His ability to collobrate and bring folks together is something that I wanted ll be loyal to be constituents, to the speaker and my colleagues in the house BUT STEVE FRIAS SAYS NOT SO FAST– 65 votes in a race of this size with this much on the line…there’s a lot going on. FRIAS PLANS TO CALL FOR A RECOUNT… AND HE’S FILED A BOARD OF ELECTIONS COMPLAINT ACCUSING MATTIELLO OF INTERFERING WITH MAIL BALLOT VOTING. Frias:The fact that I’m this close to winning…and I probably would be winning if there weren’t some mail ballot issues…tells me that the people of my district wanted change MATTIELLO DENIES THE ACCUSATIONS AND SAYS HE’S GETTING TO WORK….ITEM ONE….CAR TAX RELIEF.
