6 Democratic Dark Horse Candidates to Watch for 2020 | South Carolina Political Consulting Firm

Hey guys it’s Tyler Jones from SPEAK with
a new edition of SPEAK UP Fridays. Today I want to talk about the 2020 Presidential
election. Donald Trump officially filed his paperwork
to run for re-election last week. So I guess that means it’s campaign season
again. Great. So which Democrats will challenge Trump in
2020? While the media focuses on big names like
Elizabeth Warren, Cory Booker, and Sherrod Brown, Donald Trump taught us that the American
people aren’t necessarily looking for a typical candidate for president or the person
with the longest political resume. They want a genuine person who won’t play
the same old political games. Democrats could once again go the conventional
route in 2020 and pick the next person in line, or they could try something different. Here are 6 Democratic Dark Horse Candidates
You Should Keep your eye on for 2020. 1. Former Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley
– Let’s face it. The former Maryland Governor got a raw deal
in the 2016 race for the White House. He was perhaps the most successful Democratic
governor in the country during the Obama years– leading on issues like marriage equality,
criminal justice reform, and immigration, . He was chair of the Democratic Governor’s
Association and is one of the most effective critics of Donald Trump. But there was just no room for him in the
2016 field, unfortunately. Voters should and I think WILL give him a
much closer look this time around if he chooses to run. He deserves it. 2. Congressman Seth Moulton – I wrote an article
earlier this week about this young congressman from Massachusetts. He made headlines recently saying he was ashamed
that Donald Trump was his president. Coming from a former marine with 4 tours of
duty in Iraq, that’s a powerful statement. Moulton has become an outspoken critic of
President Trump’s Muslim ban and he’s becoming awfully good on television. He may be young, but this war hero congressman
whos not afraid to stand up to the president could be a wildcard in the 2020 race if he
chooses to take a leap of faith. Whether or not he runs, Democrats should want
him to. VP maybe? 3. Senator Kamala Harris – The newest senator
from California hadn’t even found her way around the capitol before people started speculating
that she may run for President. Let’s be honest – she’s got everything
it takes. She’s a tough former prosecutor, district
attorney and attorney general of California. Last year she became the first African-American
to be elected to the Senate from the biggest state in the country. President Obama had to apologize in 2013 for
calling Harris “by far the best looking attorney general.” I got to see her speak at a breakfast in Philadelphia
for the DNC convention and she absolutely commands the room. Unless something gets in her way, I think
she’s running for President and she may even be the early frontrunner. 4. Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti – Now we’re
getting into the non-traditional candidates. Sure, Eric Garcetti is only a mayor. But he’s the mayor of the second largest
city in the country. And no one scoffed at Rudy Guiliani’s resume
when he ran for President. Garcetti is the first Jewish mayor of Los
Angeles, a jazz pianist and composer, a Rhodes Scholar, and a Lieutenant in the Navy Reserves. In any other situation, this attractive young
politician would need to run for governor or senate before thinking about the White
House. But Democrats need to start thinking outside
of the box. Donald Trump proved that resume isn’t everything
– you’ve got to be able to inspire people. Garcetti can do just that. 5. Former Missouri Secretary of State Jason Kander
– Again, I’m going outside the box with someone who has never held an office above
State Secretary of State. Look, anyone who hasn’t been sleeping under
a rock over the last year will know that Jason Kander is an absolute rock star in the Democratic
Party and came THIS close from winning a US Senate seat in bright-red Missouri last year. You’ll remember him from the ad of the year
where he assembled an AR-15 assault rifle blindfolded. He’s a former state representative, an intelligence
officer and captain in the Army. The truth is Jason Kander is the future of
the Democratic Party. And while I think it’s unlikely that he
runs for president, he would bring a youthful energy we haven’t seen since, well, you
know who. 6. Minnesota Senator Al Franken – Maybe what
we need is a little humor. But the junior senator and former SNL star
from Minnesota has been a serious voice in the Democratic Party since winning a Senate
seat in 2008. He made Betsy DeVos look silly in her confirmation
hearing for not knowing the difference between proficiency and growth and he also let Jeff
Sessions have it in his confirmation hearing over bogus allegations of voter fraud. Sure, Franken can make ya laugh, but he can
also make Republicans cry. And he’s finally getting some encouragement
to explore a bid for the White House. Hey, we just elected a reality TV star president
of the united states. Why not an Ivy-league educated comedian with
two terms in the US Senate under his belt? And those are the 6 Democratic Dark Horse
candidates you should keep your eye on for 2020.

  1. Kander would be a great candidate for statewide office, but not ready for POTUS yet.

    Al Fracken is tempting.

Massachusetts liberals don't have a good track record.

  2. Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery. Winston Churchill. Keep going left by all means!!!!

  3. On November 5, 2015, Garcetti's office issued a statement endorsing Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election, controversy emerging from the office using government resources to distribute a campaign-related proclamation. [no big deal…the intelligence community was being used at the time to do opposition research…]

  4. O'Malley is a Roman Catholic, who was educated in Catholic schools and was described by the The Washington Post in 2015 as "a pray-every-morning, church-every-Sunday believer." He has voted for and promoted legislation on social issues, such as abortion and same-sex marriage, taking positions in direct opposition to formal teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. [hmm…Dems lost a lot of Catholics in 2016…didn't they?]

  5. Seth Moulton let's his picture be used to lie to Democrats…….On June 15, 2016, Moulton appeared on the cover of the New York Daily News with the statement 'No Civilian Should Own This Gun' in reference to [semi-automatic] "assault weapons"***. The cover pictures Moulton from his military service during a deployment to Iraq, carrying an issued M4 carbine. The gun in the picture has never been legal for civilians to own due to the "Hughes Amendment" in 1986. So there you go…a Marine who lies to the camera.

Moulton penned an opinion piece promoting gun control, including the statement: "There’s simply no reason for a civilian to own a [military-style assault weapon]. It’s no different than why we outlaw civilian ownership of rockets and landmines."

    Hello DOH.

Sales of select-fire or full automatic M4s by Colt are restricted to military and law enforcement agencies. Only under special circumstances can a private citizen own an M4 in a select-fire or fully automatic configuration. While many machine guns can be legally owned with a proper tax stamp from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, an amendment to the Firearm Owners Protection Act of 1986 barred the transfer to private citizens of machine guns made or registered in the U.S. after May 19, 1986. The only exception was for Special Occupational Taxpayers (SOT): licensed machine gun dealers with demonstration letters, manufacturers, and those dealing in exports and imports. ***At the time that the now-defunct Federal Assault Weapons Ban passed in 1994, the U.S. Justice Department said, "In general, assault weapons are semiautomatic firearms with a large magazine of ammunition that were designed and configured for rapid fire and combat use." The origin of the term has been attributed to legislators, gun control groups, the media, and the firearms industry itself. It is sometimes conflated with the term "assault rifle", which refers to selective-fire military rifles that can fire in automatic and / or burst mode. [ like an M4] Who is surprised that a politician would take advantage of the ignorance of his own voter base?

"But as we have said, the conception of the militia at the time of the Second Amendment’s ratification was the body of all citizens capable of military service, who would bring the sorts of lawful weapons that they possessed at home." [That means firearms in common use and that includes semi-automatic longarms, which are NOT "Assault rifles" and no longer can properly be termed "assault weapons" which was only defined in a now defunct statute. ]

  6. Kamala Harris……https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kamala_Harris#District_Attorney_of_the_City_and_County_of_San_Francisco

  7. Jason Kander………Kander has cited overturning Citizens United v. FEC as a political priority.

But try to keep up, Jason. Harry Reid and a cast of characters already tried to do that with a resolution that proposed a Constitutional Amendment…SR 19..I believe…remember that?

Some have argued for a constitutional amendment to overturn the decision. Although the decision does not address "corporate personhood," a long-established judicial and constitutional concept, much attention has focused on that issue. Move to Amend, a coalition formed in response to the ruling, seeks to amend the Constitution to abolish corporate personhood, thus stripping corporations of all rights under the Constitution.
Let's not get into the plethora of Pandora's boxes that this opens for business start ups in a nation whose backbone is small business, and the management of risk that goes with that…to say that MOVE TO AMEND was naive and idiotic doesn't even come close to the reality.

In an online chat with web community Reddit, President Obama endorsed further consideration of a constitutional amendment and stated "Over the longer term, I think we need to seriously consider mobilizing a constitutional amendment process to overturn Citizens United (assuming the Supreme Court doesn't revisit it)" …well…guess what…the ACLU sent a letter to Harry and company and the whole thing went away, because Harry was fixing to completely gut the First Amendment in order to pander to Move. On, and their naive but loud counterparts….you really should read that ACLU letter…it's a doozy.

"It is also useful to remember that the mixture of money and politics long predates Citizens United and would not disappear even if Citizens United were overruled. The 2008 presidential election, which took place before Citizens United, was the most expensive in U.S. history until that point. The super PACs that have emerged in the 2012 election cycle have been funded with a significant amount of money from individuals, not corporations, and individual spending was not even at issue in Citizens United. Unfortunately, legitimate concern over the influence of “big money” in politics has led some to propose a constitutional amendment to reverse the decision. The ACLU will firmly oppose any constitutional amendment that would limit the free speech clause of the First Amendment. " https://www.aclu.org/other/aclu-and-citizens-united

Then Hillary ran the biggest dark money war chest of all recorded time…lol…because..well, principles had to wait, because…HER.

  8. Nice job, Tyler. You brought out some interesting points. But… The Democratic Party has awakened its opposition. It's WOKE. Really woke. The Democratic Party has NOT done the most sensible thing. That is the post-mortem from the widest swath of defeat in modern times. Crying and shoving to the left and labeling and making excuses isn't going to work. You avoided doing these things much to your credit…but you didn't bring up "get woke" in a constructive manner. https://newrepublic.com/article/138897/democrats-biggest-disaster

  9. I love the out side the box ideas. Recent history has told us that outsiders are the way to go possibly.

  10. Little-to-no talk about POLICY on this list. Shame. Democrats are screwed if we focus on star power instead of policy in 2020.

  11. You can cross Al Franken off the list now. I think Senator Martin Heinrich of New Mexico should be on the list as well.

  12. 2004 : Obama is the future of the party!
2008 : Obama wins a decisive victory for president.
2016 : Kander is the future of the party!
    2020 : ???

  13. Al Franken? What?! 🤣 ..11 months later and his political career is finished! 😂 I had to stop watching after you said his name on account that I simply could not take you seriously anymore, sure maybe one year ago he may have seemed remotely viable for 2020 but now he would be lucky to find employment at the post office.. LOL! 😂

  14. CAREFUL of blue state candidates (e.g. Harris Franken, Garcetti, etc). West coast and NE liberals have not been able to win rural middle American.

  15. Pamala Harris got where she is a for being the mistress of Willie Brown. She is for sanctuary cities. This policy is a loser. If some illegal alien beats the crap out of you ,dont you want them thrown out of the country after he jail time? Demorats are the poverty pimps.
